SAS maintains records in accordance with College policy for the handling of student records under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). These records contain information related to the diagnosis and nature of the student’s disability, as well as applications and related policies for accommodations.
In accordance with FERPA, student’s information may only be shared with students’ express permission or when there is educational “need to know.” The latter most commonly occurs through the form of accommodation notification letters, which inform faculty of a student’s disability status and approved academic accommodations. These letters do not contain information pertaining to the student's disability.
Information may also be shared in the case of a health and safety emergency, an identified exception to confidentiality under FERPA. In such cases, SAS will only share pertinent information with appropriate college officials.
