Housing Accommocations

Student Accessibility Services (SAS) is committed to providing reasonable accommodations within Whittier College housing policies and procedures.

Students who have a disability that impacts their housing needs will need to submit a Housing Accommodations Application in addition to the Housing & Residential Life’s general Housing Application. Housing accommodations include, but are not limited to:

  • Access to an ADA restroom
  • First-floor placement
  • Single room
  • Assist-Control (A.C.) Ventilation

Students must reach out to SAS to request the Housing Accommodations Application. This application contains a section for self-report and a disability verification form. Documentation must be submitted from a qualified and licensed medical or mental health professional that addresses a student’s specific functional limitations in light of the college housing environment. Once the application is received, SAS may request a meeting to discuss requests that require more information to assess.

Housing Committee

The Housing Committee evaluates these applications and the necessity of the requested accommodations. The Committee is comprised of staff from Student Accessibility Services, the Health and Wellness Center, the Counseling Center, the Dean of Students, and Housing & Residential Life. Only completed applications will be reviewed by members of the Committee. Students will be notified via email once a decision has been made.

Please note: Housing accommodations are based on availability. Students should be attentive to housing deadlines communicated by SAS for both incoming and returning students. Requests made after the deadline will be reviewed on a rolling basis and placement cannot be guaranteed even if the accommodation is approved. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

Whittier College is a residential community where the majority of students live in one of the five residence halls across campus. As part of the residency requirement, students are expected to share a bedroom space. Housing & Residential Life is committed to supporting students in navigating roommate relationships. In addition, the nature of the communal living environment makes it unreasonable to expect a single room to offer a quiet, undisturbed study environment. Requests for single rooms should address how the presence of another person in the bedroom space presents a barrier to a student’s access to the college housing environment.
