The 2014 Student Art Exhibition recently graced the walls of the Greenleaf Gallery adding ambience and beauty to the small artistic space. Student creations, displaying abstract expressionism, caught the eye of several Whittier College spectators as well as that of this year’s guest judge Irene Tsasos, gallery director and chief curator at The Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena.
Tsasos awarded first place to senior Amanda Albert ’14 for her piece, “Australopithecus,” acrylic on canvas; second place prize to Amanda McMillan, “Untitled (Repetitions),” paper collage; third place to Daisy Uribe ’14, Untitled, monotype and Kristin Williams ’14, “Pilgrimage,” oil on canvas.
The President's Purchase Prize went to Davis Gerber for his stark drawing, “Idle Hands,” pencil on paper and to Lily Baxter for her untitled mixed-media wall installation.
The President's Purchase Prize was created with the help of Professor Jenny Herrick to enable the College to acquire works by talented Whittier students.
These works will become part of the College's already impressive collection of art and exhibited on campus for successive generations of students and visitors to see.
