The Studio Arts Department held their annual end-of-the year juried exhibit of student works.
The guest judge John Espinoza, awarded first place to Brooke Showalter ‘15 - Fractured Instrument, oil on canvas; second prize to Camille Rice ’13 - Untitled, photographs; and third prize to Nicolette Sugarman ‘13, Living Green, mixed media installation.
The President's Purchase prize went to Carolyn Mukai ’13 for her oil painting 4-[(E)-2-(Biphenyl-4-yl)diazelyn]-morphaline.
Two additional purchase prizes went to Katie Jenkins-Moses ‘13 for her piece, Cornered (watercolor on paper) and Davis Gerber ’14 for his untitled sculpture (steel and wood).
Espinoza is a Los Angeles based artist whose work has been featured in a number of venues including The Renaissance Society (Chicago); The New Museum of Contemporary Art (NY); Sandroni Rey Gallery (LA); the Museum of Contemporary Art (Miami), and the Whitney Museum of Contemporary Art (NY), among others. In the fall of 2012, Espinosa (with artist/curator Annie Wharton) founded Wharton + Espinosa, a hybrid artist run project space / commercial gallery representing emerging to mid-career artists.
The President's Purchase Prize was created with the help of Professor Jenny Herrick to enable the College to acquire works by talented Whittier students.
These works will become part of the College's already impressive collection of art and exhibited on campus for successive generations of students and visitors to see.
All student works are currently on exhibit at The Greenleaf Gallery in Mendenhall on the Whittier campus.
