Ethernet service is provided to students in each room. This is not a dial-up connection. It is a dedicated line to the campus network and Internet. There are one to three Ethernet connections per room. IT Services maintains network service to the wall jack in the student's room. IT Services will supply the student with the necessary configuration information, which will allow the student to configure her/his computer for Internet access. Internet programs (browsers, etc.) are not provided.
IT Services does not support Windows 95/98/98SE or ME systems on the college network. PC users should have the latest Service Packs and all updates from the Microsoft Windows Update web site. Whittier College requires all existing and incoming students to install and maintain anti-virus software, including updates, on their personal computers at all times. Failure to do so will result in the loss of connectivity to the Whittier College network until anti-virus software is installed.
IT Services will assist students who are having problems getting their computer on the network. This may include configuring the computer's network control panel for the campus network. Please contact IT Services at extension 4287 for assistance. Computers may be brought in by appointment only.
If it can be determined that a network problem is due to wiring or the Ethernet jack, IT Services may send a representative to the student's residence hall room to check for network continuity. An authorization form must be filled out, signed by the student, and submitted to IT Services for access into the room.
IT Services does not support other Internet Service Providers (ISPs) such as AOL, nor other email providers such as Hotmail or Yahoo.
A 10 or 10/100 BaseT Ethernet card and an RJ45 network cable are necessary to connect to the campus network. Purchase and installation of these items are the student's responsibility. These items can be purchased at computer stores such as Best Buy, Comp USA, and Fry's Electronics. IT Services sells 25-foot RJ45 network cables. We recommend a 3Com or Intel brand Ethernet card. We cannot guarantee that other Ethernet cards will work properly.
IT Services will not open a computer for any reason, including memory and Ethernet card installation or floppy disk/hard drive replacement. Any computing or network problem, which requires the installation of any software or hardware, will be referred to KIS Computer Center, who provides repair service to many of the College's Apple and PC computers.
