AP Credit/Math Placement

Breadcrumb

Entering students who have passed Advanced Placement Tests with a score of four or five will receive credit toward graduation if the tests are in subject areas taught at Whittier and the academic department approves.

Incoming students who have earned a 4 or 5 on the Calculus AB Advanced Placement Exam will be given credit for MATH 141 (4 credits), and those who earn a 4 or 5 on the Calculus BC exam will be given credit for MATH 141 (4 credits) and MATH 142 (4 credits).

Placement Exam

All new students, except those with AP calculus scores of 4 or higher, must take the Mathematics Placement Examination to determine their mathematical preparation for placement in Whittier College mathematics courses. Typically, incoming first-years will take this placement exam online the summer before their first year begins. Students who do not take the placement exam will not be able to complete their registration process (and therefore might not be assigned their top choice in the First-Year Writing Seminar).

Transfer students will also be required to take the placement exam before enrolling in any mathematics courses.

The course dependency chart explains what courses students have access to based on their placement scores.
