Now in its third consecutive year, Pre-Health Week welcomed more than 80 Whittier College students who are interested in pursuing careers in the health industry.
One of the events included a suture workshop hosted by the California School of Podiatric Medicine, where fourth-year podiatric medical students taught participants different suture techniques to treat wounds while using bananas to demonstrate and practice. The group also presented case studies and discussed the processes they go through when they first encounter a patient in the emergency room.
Created by the Advancing STEM Academic Program (ASAP), Pre-Health week was designed for students to learn about the health/medical field and receive information about co-curricular opportunities they can get involved in to help them explore their prospective health-related careers.
During the alumni panels, the presenters shared their own career paths and gave advice to the students about how to be a successful applicant for professional school admissions. Alumni speakers included: Gabriela Gutierrez ’12, student at UCLA School of Dentistry; Andrew Jimenez ’14, health education assistant at Riverside University Health System; Lovvet Hollis ’11, NICU nurse for the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services; Kevin Mancilla ’14, intern pharmacist at CVS; Cindy Bradfield ’96, physician assistant; and Lindsey (Logan) Manalili ’13, occupational therapist
