Something is rotten in the state of Denmark in Hamlet, one of Shakespeare’s most famous and compelling plays. When Hamlet, the prince of Denmark, returns home for his father’s funeral, he finds that his mother has already married his uncle—the brother of his dead father. Soon after Hamlet is confronted by this betrayal, he is haunted by the ghost of his father, and finds himself completely entangled in the throes of love, deception, and revenge. As the play enfolds, the audience witnesses Hamlet’s descent into madness as he quests to avenge the untimely death of his father.
