The study abroad experience has long been a hallmark of the liberal arts curriculum and a rite of passage for many American undergraduates. In addition to the traditional semester-long experience, Whittier College offers student the opportunity to participate in unique short-term study abroad experiences led by faculty members. These trips often involve a specific academic focus, allowing students to explore topics, ranging from business and sustainability to music and history, in an immersive environment.
This JanTerm, six faculty members are leading students on trips to destinations as near as Southern California and as distant as South Africa. Professor of Business Administration Jeff Decker's course, "Management Challenges of the 21st Century," is exploring business practices in China and includes stops in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Xiamen. Professor of Anthropology Teresa Delfin is leading students on a unique course that explores the production, politics, and power of chocolate in the Dominican Republic. Professor of Finance Fatos Radoniqui's course will take students to London for twelve days where students will learn about the financial system and its role in society. Professor of Religious Studies Joe Price's course, "El Beisbol: A Caribbean Religion," is taking place in Puerto Rico where students are examining the history of Caribbean baseball and its significance from a religious perspective. Professor of Biology Cheryl Swift has returned to South Africa for a fourth time to lead students in field research on riparian systems in the Western Cape. Staying closer to home is Professor of Kinesiology & Nutrition Science Kathy Barlow's Sports Management course which has given students behind-the-scenes access to many of Southern California's professional sports franchises and venues. In all, 95 students are enrolled in a faculty-led experience this JanTerm.
Another set of faculty-led travel courses is scheduled for May Term (mid to late May) and includes Denmark, Greece, Italy, and Peru as destinations. Courses are open to Whittier College staff and alumni on an audit basis and require all travelers to participate in planned lectures, cultural events, and meals. A special non-credit summer excursion for alumni, parents, and friends of Whittier College and led by Professor of Political Science Fred Bergerson, is departing to Western Europe and World War II sites in late July.
