Whittier College's Center for Engagement with Communities (CEC) recently hosted Whittier and Long Beach high school students for the Amy Biehl Foundation (ABF) Conference. At the conference, the students presented their research on human rights and social justice topics ranging from bullying to reproductive rights. These research topics were made possible in part to the mentoring of Whittier College students who work with Whittier and Long Beach high school students as part of the Amy Biehl Foundation program at the Center for Engagement with Communities.
Throughout the 2014-2015 academic year, four Whittier College students served as mentors to about 25 high school students who applied for the Amy Biehl Foundation program which focuses on issues of human rights and social justice.
Last fall, the high school students worked with Whittier College students on understanding human rights issues based on a curriculum developed by the CEC. In the spring, the high school students developed their own research papers on a human rights issue. In addition to teaching the students about human rights, the high school students learned how to develop a college-level research paper. They presented summaries of their research as part of the Amy Biehl Foundation conference.
