Whittier College Professor of Education and Child Development Don Bremme recently retired after 24 years of teaching generations of committed educators. A role model for Whittier students and alumni who pursued careers in education, teaching, counseling, and school administration, Bremme also started Whittier's alternative after-school program Fifth Dimension.
On May 23, and for the first time ever, past and present students who were part of Fifth Dimension and taught at the Whittier after-school program from 1993 until present, got the chance to get together, network, and reunite with their former college classmates. At the event, Bremme was recognized by generations of his former students and the newly established Don Bremme Community Education Prize was announced. This annual award will honor a high-achieving Whittier undergraduate student who shows commitment to the local community by planning to pursue a career in teaching and education.
Whittier's Fifth Dimension is part of a network of sites that extends across the country and around the world. Founded in 1993, it is sustained by a partnership of Whittier College, the Boys & Girls Club of Whittier, and the BCM Foundation. Whittier’s Fifth Dimension engage children 6-12 years old in hidden learning activities which encourage reading, writing, mathematics and problem-solving through computer games, telecommunications and other activities.
Since 1993, more than 200 Whittier College students have been a part of the Fifth Dimension program and team - each dedicating, at the very least (often more), a year of their college career to our program. Collectively, they have served more than 13,000 local youth and family.
