Writing has always been a creative outlet for Kelsey Kwong ’15 who majors in chemistry and minors in French and music. She is grateful for her professors at Whittier College who have guided and inspired her to find her voice as a writer. Kwong’s latest poem 3 Tanka will be published in UCLA's Literary Print Journal Westwind this spring.
Kwong is the epitome of a well-rounded liberal arts student. Some of her favorite courses while at Whittier include: “Asian Literature”, “Physical Chemistry”, “Riots & Revolution”, “Modern France: 1789-present”, and “Faith & Farce in Southern Fiction.” Even though Kwong’s poetry and prose show promise, she has plans to pursue medical school or a Ph.D. in chemistry after graduation.
Another Poet who recently got published is Sarah Gonzalez ’16. Gonzalez would love to become a lyricist one day and this would require the creative writing major to understand poetry and say as much as she can in as few words as possible. She is well on her way with her career goals as her poem Where I Was Jane was recently published in the “Where I live Poetry and Photography Series” by Silver Birch Press.
Gonzalez got her inspiration for the poem from her home. “It was a place poem that was inspired by the idea that my house holds different memories for each member of my family and how one place can hold a million memories. The poem explores that and how it will hold even more memories now that I have a niece,” said Gonzalez.
