Over the last few years Whittier College has taken strides to welcome more transfer students to the campus. These efforts were recently highlighted in a Los Angeles Times article that examines a national trend among private and public four-year institutions to recruit community college students from mostly minority and low-income backgrounds.
English major Christina Dedios '14 transferred from nearby Cerritos College and has been a member of the Poet Track and Field team.
"As a transfer, you definitely need to be involved in something," she said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. "I'm on the track team, so that was instant involvement and there are a lot of clubs so that you don't have to feel isolated."
Dedios faculty advisor, English professor Wendy Furman-Adams, added that "most transfer students do as well as those who start as freshmen."
"Occasionally we have transfers that don't understand our ethos, but for the most part, after a semester or two we can't tell them apart," she said.
