Whittier women’s basketball co-captain Margo Campos was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a junior in high school.
“It completely changed my life,” said Campos in a recent interview with the Whittier Daily News.
Still, the Poet point guard decided not to let the disease get the best of her and strives to stay positive.
“My health obstacles are tough,” Campos said, “but this has allowed the people around me to become more aware of diabetes, which affects so many people in the United States.”
In support of their captain, the Poet team decided to donate the proceeds from Thursday’s game against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
“Margo is as tough as they come,” said Head Coach Elizabeth Stanley. “She is incredibly competitive and demands the best from herself, while inspiring her teammates to do the same.”
According to the ADA, type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults when the body does not produce enough insulin--“a hormone that is needed to convert sugar starches and other food into energy needed for daily life.”
