Faculty and staff members recently gathered in the library to celebrate 23 new additions to the library catalogue. Each of these book was suggested by recently tenured and promoted faculty members. Selections range form "Don Quijote de la Mancha" and "The Restored Finnegans Wake" to "The Diamond Sutra" and "The Feynman Lectures on Physics: The New Millennium Edition."
The idea of gathering this collection of books came from librarian Laurel Crump who wanted to honor these faculty members and allow them to leave a lasting mark at the College in the form of a favorite book.
"Some of the tenured and promoted faculty requested books that were out-of-print, and finding copies of these books that were in good enough shape for the library was more difficult than calling our vendors or jumping on Amazon.com," said Librarian Mike Garabedian was in charge of obtaining the 23 new books.
"I was struck most by those selections that weren't related to the professor's primary research interests. For example, I think it was great that the two mathematicians in the group picked works of fiction! I was equally pleasantly surprised by chemistry professor Ralph Isovitch's choice -- "Gemstones of the World." It is a beautiful book and wonderful addition to the library that, although outside his current research and teaching purview, telegraphed what I imagined sparked Professor Isovitch's interest in chemistry in the first place."
