As president of the Associated Students of Whittier College Senate, Brookshire is focused on serving the student body, working to improve Poets’ experience from the ground up. The multihyphenate is a member of KPOET Radio and on the board of Bug Club, as well as serving as an ambassador for the Office of Equity and Inclusion and residential advisor for gender-inclusive housing. Previously, she was on the executive board of the Asian Student Association and the Program Board.
Brookshire joined ASWC as the Academic Affairs representative, not thinking the presidency was in the cards. But as she continued, she was inspired by what the Senate could be and pursued the presidency in her senior year.
“I saw how involved they could be, the advocacy they fought for, and all the ways they represented the student body,” Brookshire said.
Originally from Chino Hills, Brookshire was drawn to Whittier because of the natural and architectural beauty of the campus. The creative spaces in Wardman Gym, for example, are invigorating and freeing for the business administration and Whittier Scholars Program double major. Harkening to the days of yore, she’s interested in reviving lost traditions like The Acropolis, the student yearbook that had existed for over 100 years before publication ceased in 2013.
But Brookshire is looking ahead as much as she looks to the past. With weekly ASWC meetings held on Monday evenings, she knows the times aren’t ideal for athletes, commuter students, and others, so she has office hours on Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Above all, she wants to make sure those who can’t attend are given an opportunity to speak up.
“I want to make sure that we not only advocate for the people who come to us, but also actively seek out student voices and make them feel heard,” Brookshire said.
