Whittier professor examines why Olympics are emotional

Writer Andi Breitowich investigated why this year’s Olympics have been an emotional rollercoaster, citing Whittier College Social Psychology Professor Christina Scott’s views on the subject. Multiple variables could explain why, but a top reason is because of the athletes’ relatability on a human level.

"There's a sense of communal identity when we cheer for 'our team' (or 'our athlete'), and when our team is victorious, we share in those positive emotions,” Scott said in the article.
