Senior Spotlight: Dallas Alaniz ’24 transforms peer mentor role into career pathway

Dallas Alaniz served as a peer mentor for the research methods course in psychological sciences for five semesters.

At last month’s Honors Convocation ceremony, he received an award for outstanding service to the department. Now, the psychology major and Psi Chi member hopes to build on his undergraduate experiences by earning his MFT, which is a master’s degree in marriage and family counseling. 

“Becoming a peer mentor, I was able to gain skills in working with others,” said Alaniz, who grew up in Whittier. “And I liked that I was able to help others that are in the psych major get through one of their required courses.” 

We asked Alaniz a few questions about his life as a Poet and plans for the future. 

What's next for you after graduation?

I plan on working before going into graduate school for my MFT. 

What’s a fun fact about you?

I’ve known I wanted to be a therapist since I was 11 years old. 

What’s your favorite Whittier memory? 

Becoming a peer mentor for research methods. 

What was your favorite class at Whittier?

Forensic psychology.

What’s your favorite spot on campus?

The SLC.

If you could give your first-year self some advice, what would it be?

I would suggest getting an advisor in your major as soon as possible.
