Whittier College's Graduate Program in Education hosted the 2013 Common Core Conference last weekend. In all, 140 educators and students attended the conference's various workshops and breakout sessions. Attendees included Whittier College students and alumni, as well as teachers and administrators from local school districts.
Whittier alumna Jeannie Cash '71 was the conference keynote speaker. A coach and consultant for both the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) and for PIVOT Learning Partners, Cash coaches both district and site leaders and provides leadership training throughout California. Cash is the immediate past- president of California's State Council for Curriculum, Instruction and Accountability. Appointed by the State Superintendent of Instruction, she served on California's Committee of Practitioners for No Child Left Behind and, for the past 21 summers, has been a team leader and coach for administrative training programs at UCLA. Cash conducts Common Core trainings for ACSA throughout the state.
According to the Common Core website, "The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers."
