Professor of Religion Joe Price was included in a recent Washington Post article about the connection between Serena Williams’ professional tennis career and her faith as a Jehovah’s Witness. Despite her faith discouraging members from competitive sports on the grounds that it promotes nationalism and violence, she continues with her career.
According to Price, who has written extensively about the connection between faith and sports, Williams’ displays of faith are in line with Jehovah’s Witnesses guidelines. “Because she rarely reveals anything personal in post-game interviews, she deflects attention away from anything other than the game,” Price said. “My hunch is she tries to minimize the possibility of becoming an object of idolatrous fascination.”
