Seeking his third straight All-American honor in the 400 meter race at Saturday's NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in La Crosse, Wisconsin, junior Poet Kevin Curbelo did one better, earning the NCAA Division III Mens 400 Meter Champion after posting a time of 47.26.
Curbelo became the first Whittier College athlete to win a NCAA Division III Championship in the school's history, while at the same time earning an All-American honor for the third straight year. He edged out teammate German Fabela '16 who posted a second place finish grabbing his first All-American honor with a time of 47.41 capping off an impressive Championship run by the Purple & Gold.
Starting off the day, the 4x100 relay team of Curbelo, Fabela, Kimble Tillman '13, and Andres Vega '16 wowed the crowd putting together one of the closest finishes of the entire Championship finishing second by a foot behind SUNY Oneonta which posted a time of 40.82. Whittier finished with a time 40.91 despite holding a lead heading into the final leg.
