Every year hundreds of Whittier students continue the College’s long-held tradition of service and volunteerism. And, as is custom, students had the opportunity to share some of these community-based projects during the 2017 College and Community Expo via poster presentations and individual presentations. In addition, during a lunch-time panel, a select group of students and community members spoke about their experiences taking on some of these projects.
One of these projects, conducted in partnership with the Whittier School District, involves teaching fourth and fifth grade girls about their potential to pursue a career in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
Direct of the Boys and Girls Club Sara Salazar ’08 is one of the community partners. “We find that most of [the girls] think they can only achieve what’s in their household or what their family has done. And to expose them to so much more makes me excited for the STEM program this summer,” she said.
The Expo was organized by the Center for Engagement with Communities (CEC) director Professor Joyce Kaufman. Funded by the BCM Foundation, the CEC facilitates interaction between Whittier College and the Whittier Community.
