Joseph L. Price, professor of religious studies and co-director of the Institute of Baseball Studies at Whittier College drove over 25,000 miles through 40 states to sing the National Anthem at more than 100 minor league baseball games.
After the trip, Price collected his thoughts, experiences, and ideas and put them in a memoir titled Perfect Pitch: The National Anthem for the National Pastime. Price took the trip in an RV with his wife while sharing stories with family and friends they met along the way. While on the road he serendipitously met with Whittier alumni and residents he had not previously known.
Each ballpark reflected the city it was in, from their products and habits to the values they associated with its location. Each game he attended also had its own energy, from the easy plays that brought victory to the mistakes made causing defeat. The memoir takes a look at what America is through the lens of minor league baseball and is written by a professor with a great love for music and baseball, having sung in over 20 major league stadiums and 100 minor league games.
