WSP Welcomes Alumna

October 25, 2018

Vanessa FiskeWhittier Scholars Program (WSP) alumna Vanessa Fiske ’89 returned to Wardman Hall to speak with students about her role as director of marketing for Netflix DVD, share insights about her career path, and offer advice on life after graduation.

During her conversation with students, Fiske emphasized the importance of knowing herself as a factor that helped her navigate her career path. “I am still fundamentally who I found myself to be here at Whittier,” she said.

Fiske also focused on pushing boundaries, stepping outside of her comfort zone, the ability of storytelling and to effectively communicate, and her Whittier education as key components to her success.

“Looking back and spending some time reflecting on it, [Whittier's] interdisciplinary approach is why I’ve been so successful in my career,” said Fiske, who, as a marketing professional, works across various departments—from finance, to operations, to engineering and the ability to understand how to interact cross-functionally and globally is a foundation she built as an undergraduate.

At Netflix DVD, Fiske is responsible for all brand, product, and digital marketing for the company’s DVD.com service—a $450 million business.

During Whittier Weekend, Fiske received the Whittier Scholars Program Alumni Achievement Award during the WSP 40th Anniversary reunion dinner.
