In the 2017 fall semester, a total of 12 Poet sports teams accomplished an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The luncheon featured alumni guest speakers and former Poet soccer players Francis Maxwell '14 and Andrea Smith '11.
As a Poet athlete, Maxwell was recognized by the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and served as team captain. Since graduation, Maxwell has pursued acting full-time. In 2014, he began his stint as a soccer specialist on The Young Turks Network (TYT), an online news network. He has since become a producer and host for all of TYT Sports and is currently also the host of the new fashion channel.
Smith is in her third year of practice as the associate doctor at Healthways Chiropractic and Sports Rehab in La Mirada. She plans to begin post-doctoral training in sports medicine within the next year in order to achieve her ultimate goal of working on the sports medicine team for the 2028 Summer Olympics. Smith received her degree Kinesiology and was a member of the Phi Epsilon Kappa Honor Society. She later went on to earn a Doctor of Chiropractic from the University of Southern California. While at Whittier, she also served as team captain and was named SCIAC Athlete of the Week.
