Professor Daryl G. Smith, an expert in diversity in higher education, recently spoke to a full house in AJ Villalobos Hall. Her talk, The Diversity Imperative for Academic Excellence: Building Capacity in and for a Pluralistic Society, focused on the meaning of diversity and its impact on a college campus.
Smith spoke about the various challenges institutions of higher education are facing nationwide and provided insight into what can be done to overcome barriers in creating true diversity on all campuses. Noting how diverse Whittier is, Smith said, “the future of our country will rest on institutions like [Whittier College].”
Smith is a professor emerita of education and psychology at Claremont Graduate University and author or coauthor of a number of books and articles, including Achieving Faculty Diversity: Debunking the Myths; Making a Real Difference with Diversity; A Guide to Institutional Change; Assessing Diversity on College and University Campuses; The Challenge of Diversity; Involvement or Alienation in the Academy?; and A Diversity Research Agenda: What More Do We Need to Know?
The lecture was co-sponsored by the Hispanic Serving Institutions/Minority Serving Institutions sub-committee of ESAC.
