She Stoops to Conquer or Mistakes of a Night is a lighthearted and charming comedy of errors written in the early 18th century by Irish playwright Oliver Goldsmith who sought to mock the simple moralities of other sentimental comedies of that time. Goldsmith's farce proves to be highly entertaining with clever and witty exchanges between his characters.
She Stoops to Conquer gives an insight into the life of the Hardcastle family. Mr. Hardcastle plans to marry his forthright daughter Kate to bashful Marlow, the son of his friend Sir Charles Marlow. Mrs. Hardcastle wants her rebellious son Tony Lumpkin to marry her ward Constance Neville, who is in love with Marlow's friend Hastings. Humorous mishaps occur when Tony dupes Marlow and Hastings into believing that Mr. Hardcastle's home is an inn. In one long night, the characters lives are turned upside down and they must figure out the truth in order to resolve their great misunderstandings and make things right with one another.
This production features an all student cast and is directed by Gil Gonzalez, Assistant Professor of the Theater and Communication Arts department at Whittier College. Each year the theatre department produces up to four faculty directed productions in the Ruth B. Shannon Center for the Performing Arts. These productions afford students the opportunity to engage in theatre as a collaborative process.
