Whittier Welcomes Xenia Markowitt as Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students

Xenia MarkowittWhittier College is further strengthening its leadership team with Xenia Markowitt stepping into the role of Vice President of Student Life and Dean of Students.

Effective Monday, July 15, she succeeds Henry Gee, who served in an interim capacity for the 2023-24 academic year.

A seasoned higher education administrator with a background in intercultural and multilingual communication, program development, and team dynamics, Markowitt comes to Whittier from serving most recently in student affairs at the University of Redlands, where she was contracted through the Registry. (The Registry provides senior officers to fill positions for a specified period.) With a proven track record of fostering inclusive and innovative programs that enhance the student experience, Markowitt brings a wealth of experience to Whittier. She previously served as interim vice provost of student success at The New School, dean of students at Bennington College, dean of students at Marlboro College, associate dean for campus life at New York University Abu Dhabi, and director of the Center for Women & Gender at Dartmouth College, among many other staff and faculty roles spanning nearly 25 years.

“I’m delighted to have Xenia join my cabinet,” said President Kristine Dillon ’73. “Her extensive expertise in student affairs and her passion for student success and wellbeing will be invaluable assets as we continue to attract and support a diverse and vibrant campus community.”

Markowitt is fluent in Spanish and holds a master’s degree in Latin American and Caribbean studies and a bachelor’s in film and television production, both from New York University. She also has a degree in French studies from the University of Aix-En-Provence in France. 

“I am delighted to join the talented leadership team of Whittier College and the Office of Student Life,” said Markowitt. “I look forward to welcoming the newest class of Poets to campus.”

In addition to her career in higher education administration, Markowitt has taught, published, and contributed to professional organizations such as the National Association of Student Affairs Professionals and National Women’s Studies Association.
