An aspiring physical therapist from Baldwin Park, Gonzalez has spent the last four years pouring her energy into academics, athletics, and community. She will graduate with a double major in kinesiology and Spanish and a minor in French. In addition to her three years on the track and field team, Gonzalez is a member of three honor societies: Phi Epsilon Kappa, Sigma Delta Pi, and Pi Delta Phi.

Her work at the Career Center introduced her to important mentors who supported her ambitions and encouraged her to stay true to herself. Reflecting on the full arc of her time at Whittier, she said, “It very much became a place dear to my heart. Who would have thought I would make such close connections with fellow students, faculty, staff, and alumni who I know have helped me shape the person I am today?”

We asked her a few questions about her experience as a Poet and her plans for the future.

What’s next for you after graduation?
I’m taking a gap year to work as a physical therapy aide full time and prepare to apply for Doctor of Physical Therapy programs so I can start my journey as a physical therapist.

What’s a fun fact about you?
I’m an assistant coach for Sierra Vista High School wrestling, specifically working with the girls' team. I just completed my fourth season back in February and will start my fifth this upcoming winter season.

What’s your favorite Whittier memory?
I have two. The first is being part of the throws team for track and field. Even though I stepped off the team my senior year for personal reasons, the last three years have been unforgettable as a whole whether it was during competition or practice. The way every day during the season was never boring and there was always something to look forward to was the reason I enjoyed being on this team for so long. There’s not one year where we didn’t get along and come together as a family. The second is working for the Career Center. I still remember the day I was being interviewed by the Pro-Staff and not knowing the office itself would become such an essential part of my life (shoutout to Sandra, German, and Des!). Not only did they help me grow professionally, but personally as well. Because of this team, I know that I always have that support right behind me and that I can still be myself by dreaming big.

What was your favorite class at Whittier?
I can’t choose! History & Philosophy of Sport and Motor Learning.

What’s your favorite spot on campus?
Diehl Language Lab and the Career Center, now that it was moved back to the Campus Center.

If you could give your first-year self some advice, what would it be?
Enjoy it while it lasts, because before you know it, four years will go by quickly! Also keep in mind that within these four years, people will come and go in your life. Just remember that there’s always a reason, and those who stay by your side will be the ones to help you grow.

As we count down toward Commencement, Whittier College is highlighting seniors with something to say. Check back every Friday for the latest installment in this series.
