“One of the best parts of my job is speaking with young people and sharing my story about what inspired me to run for Congress,” said Sanchez.
In 2002, Sanchez was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving as the first Latina on the House Committee on Ways and Means and the House of Judiciary Committee. Since her election, she has devoted her career to advocating for families, improving education systems, and encouraging the development of future leaders, amongst other pursuits.
On Sanchez’s visit to the institution, she connected with students and shared her career journey into politics, ranging from navigating the high cost of campaigns to how her identity as Latina informs her legislative decision-making. She also spent time answering students' questions.
“We need more young people from diverse communities in politics,” said Sanchez, “These students are the next generation of activists, business owners, and community leaders. After meeting with them, I know we have a bright future ahead of us.”
