Best campus event attended while at College Volunteering and fundraising with Professor Householder and Kinesiology Club members at the Los Angeles Downtown Women’s Shelter on Skid Row. It was powerful to see an organization empowering women in order to change the cycle of poverty.
Most unique class taken Buddha & Buddhism with Professor Jake Carbine. Learning about the history of the Buddhist religion with Professor Carbine incorporated meditation and an outing to a local Buddhist Monastery, which was an eye-opening experience to the lifestyle of the monks.
Best thing about my major Understanding the science behind the body, through movement, physical fitness, the importance of nutrition, and discovering new ways of improving our health.
Accomplishment I’m most proud of while at Whittier Receiving the Yao Yuan Sze Fellowship through the Kinesiology and Nutrition Science Department. This fellowship enabled me to spend the summer in Washington D.C. with DC Greens as a school garden intern and DC Central Kitchen as a local food intern.
Best thing about my internships Gaining experience with various organizations that focus on health, physical fitness, food policy and education, and food access initiatives.
Study abroad experiences I spent the fall 2014 in Prague, Czech Republic. I traveled to eight countries during my time abroad. Learning Prague’s history through conversations with locals opened my eyes to the lasting effects of a country’s transition from communism to a democracy.
Advice to incoming first-years Keep an open mind and get involved on campus.
Plans after Whittier Complete a master’s in public health and nutrition. Create a 501C non-profit organization dedicated to food and physical activity access, education, and policy at a onestop community center. I want to empower underserved communities to create ownership, opportunity, and sustainability through urban gardening, nutrition education, fitness curriculum, and employment opportunities.
