Paddy Publishes Book on Postmodernist Perspectives

David Paddy, Whittier College Professor, EnglishProfessor of English Language and Literature David Ian Paddy published The Empires of J. G. Ballard: An Imagined Geography, a book that provides a critical look at the post-war science fiction novels written by J. G. Ballard on the topics including post-colonialism, maps and borders, psychic imperialism, savage modernity, dying frontiers of space and Ballard as a critic of Englishness.

“Dr. Paddy's fascinating book explores my father's fiction within an international context and offers a profound reading of a man who always kept his eyes and mind open to the world,” said Fay Ballar, daughter of J.G. Ballard.

Paddy has published critical literary essays on Angela Carter, Niall Griffiths, Jackie Kay and Jeff Noon, a chapter titled “Key Critical Concepts and Topics” for The Modernism Handbook (eds. Philip Tew and Alex Murray) for Continuum, as well as a co-authored piece with Professor of Physics Seamus Lagan on chaos theory for the Journal of College Science Teaching about pedagogical methods of literary analysis.

A distinguished professor, Paddy has been recognized with two teaching awards, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching California Professor and the Nerhood Award for Teaching Excellence at Whittier College.
