Whittier College Theatre and Communication Arts students recently closed a successful run of William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice and are being recognized by the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) for their efforts.
Scarlett Cazares '16 who brought to life the character of Portia and Cristian Perez '18 who played multiple roles including Launcelet Gobbo, Prince of Aragon, and Tubal have been nominated to participate in the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship competition at the 2017 KCACTF Regional Festival in Mesa, Arizona at Mesa Community College in February.
Cazares and Perez have been invited to bring a series of scenes and monologues to compete with other undergraduate and graduate student actors in KCACTF's Region VIII, which includes schools from Hawaii, Guam, California, Utah, Nevada, and Arizona.
Properties Supervisor Claire McNally '17 earned a Meritorious Achievement Award for her work on this production.
The Merchant of Venice was directed by Associate Professor of Theatre Gil Gonzalez, costume design was provided by Monica French, sound design by Roman Curiel '19 and stage management by Amanda Garcia '18.
