Ortiz Programs

Breadcrumb

The Ortiz Programs, named after Martin Ortiz '48, seek to expand knowledge and awareness of Latinx culture, language, and history through a variety of events and support services.

The Ortiz Programs provide academic and career resources, as well as financial aid guidance and overall emotional support, primarily to first-generation Latinx students. The program serves as a liaison between Latinx students, family, alumni, community organizations, and the Whittier College community.

Annual Events

Orientation Session for Spanish-Speaking Families

We invite students and families to join this special session to learn about resources available to all incoming Poets. During small group sessions, families will learn more about Whittier—getting answers to some of their basic concerns—and how they can support their students during their transition into college. It is also an opportunity to meet other Whittier students, professors, and staff.

Tardeada

A yearly event held during Latinx Heritage Month and Homecoming, Tardeada is open to all students and their families, alumni, members of the Whittier community, and friends of the College. Tardeada is a celebration of Latinx culture and has been a College staple for more than four decades. It's an opportunity to be in community to celebrate with traditional food, music, and dances from Latin America.

Día de los Muertos

The Day of the Dead Celebration is an annual cultural event held in November to honor and remember loved ones who have passed away. This program is a collaboration between MEChA and the OEI.

Latinx Graduation Celebration

The Latinx Graduation is a bilingual and intimate celebration where family, friends, and community members come together to highlight the achievements of our graduating seniors and honor students' successes in the spirit and traditions of the Latinx culture.
