Besides providing an orientation at the beginning of the school year, Whittier College has also offered the World Wide Whittier course this year. Professors Ken Berthel and Doreen O'Connor-Gómez, both of the Modern Languages and Literatures department, have spent fall semester welcoming and acclimating students from around the world to the United States and, in particular, Whittier and the greater Los Angeles area.
Each week, the course focuses on a topic, followed by an experiential learning event, including field trips. For example, this week the professors and students joined an educational tour of SoFi Stadium, an architectural marvel that's home of the National Football League's Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers teams. The goal is for students to finish the semester feeling more comfortable and energized to confidently engage in their first year of study.
Whittier provides a personalized higher education experience to a diverse student body. In fact, more than 20 foreign nationalities study at the College, with students from Ethiopia representing the largest number from any one country.
