Student academic performance is reviewed by the Office of the Registrar and updated on student transcripts following each regular semester (fall and spring). Academic standings are not updated following January, summer, and other non-standard instructional periods.
The chart below summarizes each current academic standing and the resulting standing based on the semester and overall grade point averages (GPA) achieved in a regular semester:
Students encountering academic problems are advised to seek assistance from their faculty advisor, the Center for Advising and Academic Success (CAAS), and the Office of Student Life. Continuing academic problems may result in academic probation then suspension. Students on suspension will not be permitted to register for one or more semesters.
A joint faculty and administrative committee using the following guidelines administers the Academic Review Process:
1. At the conclusion of any regular semester (fall or spring) students are considered in Good Standing when their overall and semester grade point averages are both 2.0 or above.
1. At the conclusion of any regular semester (fall or spring) students are placed on Academic Warning when their semester grade point average is below 2.0 and their overall grade point average is above 2.0.
2. Students placed on Academic Warning receive a letter of notification from the Associate Dean of Faculty.
3. It is required that students on Academic Warning participate in the Academic Success Program through the Center for Advising and Academic Success (CAAS). See Section E.
4. Students on Academic Warning return to Good Standing when their overall and semester grade point averages are both above 2.0.
1. At the conclusion of any regular semester (fall or spring) students on Academic Warning or in Good Standing are placed on Probation if they receive overall and semester grade point averages below 2.0.
2. Students placed on Probation receive a letter of notification from the Associate Dean of Faculty.
3. Students on Probation are required to participate in the Academic Success Program through the Center for Advising and Academic Success (CAAS). See Section E.
4. Students on Probation are required to participate in the Academic Success Program through the Center for Advising and Academic Success. Student-Athletes on Probation can continue to participate in Intercollegiate Athletics on the condition that the Student-Athlete fully complies with the Academic Success Program in CAAS.
5. Students on Probation continue on Probation when they receive a semester grade point average above 2.0, but their overall grade point average remains below 2.0.
6. Students on Probation return to Good Standing when they receive overall and semester grade point averages above 2.0.
1. Students on Probation who earn an overall and semester grade point average below 2.0 are suspended for at least one semester.
Students on Academic Warning and Probation are required to participate in an Academic Success Program through the Center for Advising and Academic Success (CAAS). Students who are not required to participate can also use the Program. Students who are required to participate in the Academic Success Program must sign an educational contract which includes going to CAAS to seek academic assistance, meeting with their CAAS advisor on a regularly scheduled basis, utilizing tutoring services and the academic coaching or the student-athlete peer mentoring programs, or reducing their course load to no more than 12 credits. Each plan will be developed based on the needs of the individual student. If a student does not meet the requirements of the academic contract, that will affect eligibility to appeal Suspension or prohibitions of Probation. See Section G.
1. Students who wish to appeal the conditions that pertain to their level of academic review (Probation or Suspension) may complete an appeal in writing with the Academic Review Committee. This committee, comprised of faculty and administration, meets following each fall and spring semesters.
1. Appeal of Academic Suspension or for relief from Probation prohibitions shall include documentation of the following:
a. A plan from the student analyzing their academic load, work commitments, and any other factors that might have contributed to poor performance, and what steps the student has taken and will take in the future to correct the situation;
b. A letter of support from the student’s academic advisor or program director indicating a plan for restoration to satisfactory academic standing; and
c. Supporting documents from qualified professionals for students who have experienced medical difficulties or other unusual circumstances.
2. Students may only appeal Academic Suspension or Probation prohibitions if they meet the following criteria:
a. Must not have an outstanding tuition balance with the institution (approval of the Business Office).
b. Students receiving financial aid must show that they meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements to continue to receive aid if their petition is granted (approval of Financial Aid).
c. Must not have any outstanding disciplinary violations (Approval of the Dean of Students)
d. Fulfilled their educational contract if they participated in an Academic Success Program the prior semester (approval of the Director of CAAS).
3. In considering an Academic Suspension appeal, some consideration may be given to the total number of units earned toward graduation.
4. Students may appeal Committee decisions to the Associate Dean of Faculty.
5. Students successfully completing in-progress or incomplete-grades may have the severity of the prohibitions reduced.
6. Incomplete-, In-Progress-, W-, and CR- grades are not be used in calculating grade point averages.
7. The Academic Review Committee may ask to meet with the student. Otherwise decisions are based on the written appeal.
8. If a student successfully appeals their Academic Suspension, they will be re-admitted on Probation.
a. A student readmitted on Probation or Warning is readmitted under the same restrictions as all other students on Probation or Warning. See Section D.
b. Additional conditions may be attached to the probation (educational contract).
1. Previously suspended students may apply for readmission through the Office of the Registrar by meeting the following criteria:
a. Successfully complete a minimum of six transferable semester credit hours at another regionally accredited postsecondary institution with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in those courses;
b. Must not have an outstanding tuition balance with the institution (approval of the Business Office);
c. Students receiving financial aid must show that they meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements to continue to receive aid if their petition is granted (approval of Financial Aid);
d. Must not have any outstanding disciplinary violations (approval of the Dean of Students); and
