Requirements for the Major in English

English majors select one of three areas of emphasis, each with its own specific requirements:

Requirements for the Major in English with an Emphasis in Literature

  • Any 100-level ENGL
  • ENGL 210: Critical Procedures
  • ENGL 313: Editing and Publishing Emerging Media 
  • One class in each of 3 Genres (Fiction, Poetry, Drama)
  • One class in pre-1900 literature
  • One class in post-1900 literature
  • ENGL 300: Junior Seminar
  • ENGL 410: Senior Seminar
  • 36 credits total with at least 18 at the 300-level or above

Requirements for the Major in English with an Emphasis in Creative Writing

  • Any 100-level ENGL
  • ENGL 210: Critical Procedures
  • ENGL 313: Editing and Publishing Emerging Media
  • 3 CW workshops (at least 2 genres; at least 1 300-level) 
  • One class in pre-1900 literature
  • One class in post-1900 literature
  • 410 Senior Seminar
  • 36 credits total with at least 18 at the 300-level or above

Requirements for the Major in English with an Emphasis in Applied Media Studies

  • ENGL 103: Better Living through Media Literacy
  • ENGL 140: Intro to Media Studies
  • ENGL 210: Critical Procedures
  • ENGL 313 Editing and Publishing Emerging Media
  • 2 Praxis Courses
  • One class in pre-1900 literature
  • One class in post-1900 literature
  • 410 Senior Seminar
  • 36 credits total with at least 18 at the 300-level or above

Requirements for the Minor in English

A minor in English requires any 18 credits in English.
