Music Professor Performs at Grammy Salute to Music Legends

Danny LozanoTwo-time Grammy award-winning flautist Danilo Lozano, Professor and Richard and Billie Deihl Distinguished Chair in Music, brought his talents to a national stage this past weekend during the Grammy Salute to Music Legends.

The televised concert, put on by PBS in conjunction with the Recording Academy, offered a primetime spotlight for the Academy’s 2016 special merit award recipients. Honorees not only performed, they also listened to renditions of their songs by those they’ve inspired.

Lozano performed alongside Andy Garcia and the CineSon All Stars, honoring Celia Cruz for her Lifetime Achievement Award. Internationally known as the “Queen of Salsa,” paying tribute to this four-time Latin Grammy winner was no small feat.

Lozano is a founding member of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and is well-known for his passion for Latin jazz and charanga music. Every year he brings well-known artists to Whittier through the Inside Latin Jazz program held at the Ruth B. Shannon Center for the Performing Arts. Lozao has performed with some of the greatest artists in the genre, including Celia Cruz, Poncho Sanchez, Latin Side All Stars, Israel Lopez "Cachao," and was a featured artist on the soundtrack for Andy Garcia's film The Lost City. In addition, Lozano performs regularly in both Los Angeles and across the country.
