Honor Society
Whittier operates local chapters of national honorary academic and leadership societies. Members of these organizations are selected based on criteria such as grade point average, and, in general, exhibit a keen dedication to scholarship, service, and leadership.
Phi Alpha Theta
A professional society, Phi Alpha Theta seeks to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication, and the exchange of learning and through among historians.
Fellowships for Phi Alpha Theta members: Phi Alpha Theta Honor Society offers a total of 12 national honorary awards, including the Graydon A. Tunstall undergraduate award, which has an award amount of $1,000 for juniors to support the fall semester of senior year, and three postgraduate scholarships ranging from $1,000-$1,250 to attend graduate school in history, whether master's or Ph.D. work. Deadlines for these awards are March 1st. Additional awards are offered in fields relating to historical study by region, such as American or European history.
