Student Conduct Policy

Whittier College is a community of scholars devoted to higher obligation, both to themselves and to each other, to foster an atmosphere of mutual learning. Members of the community — faculty, staff, and students — have a respect and high regard for life and property of the College. It is expected that all members of the community will conduct themselves as responsible citizens and will comply with all regulations contained in the Whittier College Catalog, the Student Handbook, Residential Life Policies, and other College publications and notices. Students are also expected to abide by all local, state, and federal laws.

Students participating in official Whittier College functions off-campus, including but not limited to field trips, social programming and study abroad programs are held to the same standards of conduct as all Whittier College students on campus. As such, students will be held responsible for damage to property and other conduct violations. Adjudication of such cases will take place once the student returns to campus. In the event that a student's behavior poses a health or safety risk to that student or others, a faculty or staff member may make the decision to terminate that student's participation in the activity immediately and make arrangements for the student to return to campus.

It is assumed that these high standards will be self-enforced and that in the event that they are not, the College may take action to protect the interests of the community. The College reserves the right to suspend or expel any student whose conduct on or off campus is unbecoming to a Whittier College student or discredits the institution.

Goal

The goal of the student discipline system at Whittier College is to help support an environment where there is respect for self and others within our diverse community. An essential component to sustaining this type of atmosphere is through the development, implementation and enforcement of policies that protect the rights of all community members, provide learning experiences for policy violators and reduce disruptive behavior by using fair and reasonable approaches. Consistent with the College's primary mission, this program should encourage student learning, skill development, as well as the development of attitudes and values needed to live, lead, serve and function with a global society.

Program Objectives

  • Intellectual Growth – Help students learn and understand accountability and responsibility for their behavior. Recognize the consequences of personal actions and purposes of institutional policies.
  • Values Clarification – Students understand rationale for institutional policies, source of policies, as well as how their behavior impacts others.
  • Accountability – Students learn how their behavior impacts those around them and the consequences for their behavior.
  • Personal Growth – Students learn greater responsibility for their behavior and how to function within the community.
  • Delivery of Services – Staff should meet with students, adjudicate cases and provide written notification within 10 days of the alleged policy violation.

Policy on Nondiscrimination, Grievance Process and Civil Rights Investigation Protocol

Whittier College (the College) is a community of students, faculty, staff, and administrators dedicated to teaching, learning, service and scholarship. Code of Students’ Rights & Responsibilities

The Code of Students’ Rights & Responsibilities is established to foster and protect the core mission of the College and contain the policies and procedures governing student conduct at Whittier College. The Code provides information about the conduct process, definitions of prohibited conduct, and multiple appendices listing various policies for the campus. Members of our community are expected to abide by the standards of conduct articulated within the Code of Students’ Rights & Responsibilities.

Academic Integrity

When we engage in scholarship, we seek answers to questions we care about; we learn from others’ work, and we add our contributions to a growing body of knowledge. However, we cannot honestly value that knowledge unless we also value truth. Acts of academic dishonesty are lies. They degrade our shared search for understanding as a community of scholars, and they undermine the integrity of that community by injecting falsehood into our dialogue. As a historically Quaker college, Whittier honors the Friends’ testimonies of truth, community, and equality, where equality reflects our conviction that we are all worthy of equal respect. Thus, when members of our community commit acts of academic dishonesty, they are not committing victimless crimes. By violating – even in secret – the respect which they owe their colleagues, they tear the fabric of our community. Confidentiality & Disclosure of Educational Records (FERPA)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level. FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records when their child has given written permission. Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Whittier College is permitted to disclose information from your educational records to your parents if your parents (or one of your parents) claim you as a dependent for federal income tax purposes. If you are not claimed as a dependent or you do not know whether you are claimed as a dependent for federal income tax purposes, but you would like the College to disclose information from your educational records to your parents (or another designee), please complete the release form below. Per College policy, release of student disciplinary records requires a specific release form. However, the College has the right to release information regarding alcohol or drugs to parents or legal guardians. View the Release Disciplinary Records form.


Student Conduct Boards

The Student Conduct Board is a faculty/staff and student board concerned with the alleged violation of significant College policy. The Student Conduct Board is empowered to hear all allegations, review all relevant facts, and render a decision relative to allegations. Any member of the College community may file charges against a student for violations of the Code of Students’ Rights and Responsibilities. A charge shall be prepared in writing and directed to the Student Conduct Administrator or designee. Any charge(s) should be submitted as soon as possible after the event takes place, preferably within two weeks. The Student Conduct Board is composed of four regular voting members (two students and two faculty/staff members) and one chairperson who votes only to break a tie. The proceedings of a Student Conduct Board are confidential and closed to protect the interest of those charged as well as those who may bring charges. Peer Review Boards

The Peer Review Board (PRB) is a student group empowered to hear less severe allegations of violations that occur in the residence halls. Under the authority of the Dean of Students’ Office, PRB meets weekly to hear student cases. Missing Student Policy

In compliance with Section 488 of the Higher Education Act of 2008, the following policy and procedures have been developed to assist in locating student(s) living within on-campus housing, who based on the facts and circumstances known to the College are determined to be missing.

Anyone who believes a student to be missing should report their concern to Campus Safety or the Dean of Students’ Office. Every report made to the College will be followed up with an immediate investigation and once the student is determined to be missing, the name and emergency contact information for the individual(s) they would like contacted will be utilized.
