Whittier Water Polo Players Honored

The American Water Polo Coaches Association has selected two Whittier College players as members of the Division III All-America Collegiate Water Polo Team.

Senior Joe Gonzalez of Commerce, Calif., and junior Jeff Padgett of Whittier, were named to the 2003 team, according to Wendell Jack, director of athletics.  “These are well deserved and wonderful accolades for two very hard-working student-athletes, and the Poet community is very proud of Joe and Jeff,” Jack said.

A four-year starter who served as team captain, Gonzalez is a Spanish major who came to Whittier from Bell Gardens High School.  A biology major, Padgett attended Sonora High School.

In addition, Padgett was named to the All-SCIAC (Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) first team for water polo. Gonzalez was named to the All-SCIAC second team, along with senior Ryan Quigley, a business major who came to Whittier from California’s Palm Desert High School.

Whittier College finished third in SCIAC, with a record of 6-3.

Located 18 miles east of Los Angeles, Whittier College is an independent, four-year college offering traditional liberal arts majors and strong pre-professional programs taught in the context of the liberal arts.  Whittier Law School, which is accredited by the American Bar Association and is a member of the Association of American Law Schools, is located on a separate campus in Costa Mesa.
