Oratorical Contest to Honor King’s Legacy

WHAT:                        Third Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Contest

                                    at Whittier College


WHEN:                        Thursday, Jan. 30

                             Opening reception, 6 p.m.

                             Contest begins at 7 p.m.


WHERE:                      The Ruth B. Shannon Center for the Performing Arts at Whittier

                             (At the corner of Philadelphia St. and Painter Ave.)  

COST:                         Free and open to the public, but tickets are required.  Tickets are available by calling the Shannon Center Box Office at 562-907-4203
or at the door on Jan. 30.

ADD:                           Students entering the contest this year will focus on the theme
“Start the Healing and Rebuilding: Stop the Killing.” The speeches
should explain how the students can contribute to Dr. King’s vision
for justice and civil rights for all people, according to Delaphine
Hudson, assistant dean of students and director of residential life
at the college.  The speakers are limited to eight minutes, and may
incorporate King’s achievements and his philosophy of non-violent
opposition to social injustice, Hudson said, as well as other related
issues like religion, class, gender, age, sexual orientation and ability
