Whittier College Men’s Lacrosse Ranked #1
On Monday, April 14, the undefeated Whittier College men’s lacrosse team found itself sitting at the top of the USILA/STX (United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association) Division III poll. According to Wendell Jack, athletic director at Whittier College, this is the first time that a college west of the Rocky Mountains has been ranked number one, ever.
The Whittier College Poets were propelled to the top by a victory over the University of Arizona on April 13 combined with an earlier win by Lynchburg over Salisbury University, who had previously been ranked number one. The Poets, with an 11-0 record, go into the last game of the season, a home game against Johnson State University on April 19 at 7 p.m., and await the NCAA pairings for post-season play.
Whittier College’s lacrosse program was founded as a club sport in 1982 and became a NCAA Division III team in 1990. Last year the Poets finished a 12-2 season ranked eighth and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals. This is the first year that the Poets are under the leadership of Coach Dave Schaller, who was offensive coordinator last season.
Located 18 miles east of Los Angeles, Whittier College is an independent, four-year college offering traditional liberal arts majors and strong pre-professional programs taught in the context of the liberal arts. Whittier Law School, which is accredited by the American Bar Association and is a member of the Association of American Law Schools, is located on a separate campus in Costa Mesa.
