A Los Angeles resident, Erburu has served on the boards of the Ahmanson Foundation, the Getty Trust, the Parsons Foundation, the Fletcher Jones Foundation, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens.

During the Commencement ceremony, Erburu will receive an honorary degree from Whittier College. Other honorary degree recipients will be Douglas W. Ferguson, a long-time Whittier community leader and member of the Whittier College Board of Trustees; D. Antoinette Handy, a concert flutist, educator, author, and former music program director of the National Endowment for the Arts; and Tina Howe, Tony Award-nominated playwright.

Located 18 miles east of Los Angeles, Whittier College is a four-year, independent liberal arts college offering traditional liberal arts majors and strong pre-professional programs taught in the context of the liberal arts. Whittier Law School, which is accredited by the American Bar Association and the Association of American Law Schools, is located on a separate campus in Costa Mesa.
