Villalobos Hall was filled to capacity on Friday night, as the College honored its many volunteer groups at the 3rd Annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. Fittingly held during National Volunteer Week--a brainchild of 1934 alumnus and U.S. President Richard Nixon--the event drew representation from 16 different organizations supporting the College in a variety of ways, from students in the Senior Class Gift Campaign, to Class Agents, to community members who support the cultural programming at the Shannon Center. During the celebration, Alumni Board member and well-known community leader Lyn Carty '96 spoke about the importance of each group's work, citing their many contributions made on behalf of the College. The pinnacle to the program was the awarding of the Dezember Medal for Distinguished Service to Ruth B. Shannon, a longtime trustee and friend to the College, and an unparalleled advocate for the College and its programs. Mrs. Shannon was presented the award by Whittier College President Sharon Herzberger and Medal namesake, Rayburn S. Dezember '53.
