Rent is a musical drama about a group of young, struggling artists and musicians trying to make it big in New York’s lower east side and make rent each month. They are all uncertain about their futures. The issue of HIV/AIDS casts a dark shadow on the production but things are kept light with the themes of love and hope. The show centers on Mark Cohen, Roger Davis, Mimi Màrquez, Tom Collins, Angel Dumott Schunard, Maureen Johnson, Joanne Jefferson, Benjamin Coffin III and the struggles that they face individually and as a whole. Throughout the musical, their stories unfold and entangle within one anothers' as they make life-defining decisions and as some of them are forced to realize that life is not permanent.

Rent was one of the longest running shows Broadway and won numerous awards including the Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award.

Directed and choreographed by theatre professor Jennifer S. Holmes; musical direction by professor Stephen Cook, this is an all student production. The theater department at Whittier puts out several faculty directed productions every year to allow for students to contribute to the theatrical and creative processes.
