Students at Helping Hands DayMore than 100 Whittier College students, alumni, staff, faculty, and administrators rolled up their sleeves on Saturday, September 26 and participated in the 21st annual Helping Hands Day. Participants gathered in the Campus Center for breakfast before boarding buses to various service sites in and around the city of Whittier.

Sites that hosted Whittier College volunteers were the American Cancer Society, Bolsa Chica Conservancy, Brookdale Central Whittier, Murphy Ranch Park, H.O.W. House, Pasadena Ronald McDonald House, Sorensen Library, and Wilson Middle School.

"Helping Hands Day has a multitude of layers for community building and experiential learning," said Shauna Sobers, director for the Leadership, Experience, and Programs (LEAP) office. "It connects Whittier College students to their surrounding community, it helps build community between entities of campus that do not typically get to interact with each other, it allows each entity to learn alongside one another, and, hopefully, it sparks an initial connect to the importance of community service for all involved."

Helping Hands Day was coordinated by the Office of Leadership, Experience, and Programs (LEAP) and the Dean of Students' Office. Since its launch in 1994, Helping Hands Day has grown to include volunteer sites and partners beyond the campus.
