Cooper Endowed Drama Prize
Taking a road trip out West from Sedona, Arizona, alumni couple from the Class of 1952 Charles (Chuck) and JoAnn Cooper made a stop at the Whittier campus to visit their alma mater and attend the 55th Annual Scholarship & Fellowship Luncheon.
Now retired from their respective careers as a minister and an elementary school counselor, Chuck and JoAnn fell in love more than 60 years ago on the Whittier campus. To honor their family’s history at the College and the legacy of Chuck’s father, Dr. Charles W. Cooper, in 1999 they established the Charles W. and Edris Cooper Endowed Drama Prize. In addition to attending Whittier College in the early 1920s, Dr. Cooper was on the faculty in the English department during the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s and headed the theatre program for much of his time on the campus, challenging and inspiring students’ love of the humanities across the decades.
The Cooper family’s scholarship is awarded each year to support a junior or senior student at Whittier majoring the theatre arts. At the Annual Scholarship Luncheon, Chuck and JoAnn visited with the recipient of their scholarship, Melanie Hoglund, ’14 a Theatre & Communication Arts major, with a concentration in performance, from St. Paul, Minnesota.
