Students
Sports
At Whittier, we believe your college experience should help you develop and grow holistically, and to help you do so, the College is committed to providing numerous opportunities for students to develop their intellectual, spiritual, and physical lives—the latter through a variety of structured athletics programs, recreational sports and intramural clubs, provision of open fitness facilities, and other events geared toward health and wellness.
COMPETITIVE & RECREATIONAL SPORTS
Whittier is an NCAA Division III school, which means that while still competitive, more of our students have the chance to play for one or more of our 21 collegiate teams. And we have a solid record in our West Coast conference, winning more than 70 championship titles in numerous sports, including men's water polo, women's soccer, men's lacrosse, and football, among others.
For the recreational athlete, there is a club sports and intramurals program open to any eligible student, as well as to faculty and staff. Most all intramural teams are co-ed, and past sports have included ultimate Frisbee, volleyball, basketball, and soccer.
GENERAL FITNESS
Through our kinesiology department, there are a number of aerobic and sports classes offered for credit each semester. But for those students who prefer to create and follow their own fitness program, we offer excellent athletic facilities some of which were recently renovated in summer of 2007. At the southeastern corner of campus, atop Earlham Drive, is the Graham Athletics Center, which includes the George Allen Fitness Center with free weights and aerobic machines; Dave Jacobs Basketball Court; a dance studio; training rooms; and men's and women's locker/shower facilities. Outdoors are the Ettinger Tennis Courts, the Slade Aquatics Center, Bonham Track, and four playing fields—all of which are open to student use, provided there are no team practices/games taking place.
SPORTS EVENTS
Traditionally set in December, one of the most anticipated, annual, campus events is SportsFest, which finds several student teams competing for the title over three days, in activities such as ping-pong, softball, tug-o'-war, 8-ball, and dodgeball, to name a few.
