Residential Life Procedures & Policies
At its core, Whittier College is a strong and vibrant residential community, comprised of scholars, athletes, artists, performers, volunteers, and leaders, hailing from both this country and abroad. Living together in the seven campus residence halls, students will experience educational, social, and personal development and change—likely in a variety of ways. To ensure all residents have the best experience possible, the College has put in place several policies and procedures for residential living, student conduct within the halls, and facility maintenance.
Part of these policies are determined each year by hall residents, who will devise their own floor rules and regulations based on mutual consensus. Roommates, too, will be required to create and agree to live by shared standards. In all cases, these agreements stem from certain basic rights, as outlined below.
Basic Rights of All Whittier College Residents
- The right to study free from undue interference in one's room.
- The right to have one's personal belongings respected.
- The right to live in a clean, safe and healthy environment.
- The right to free access to one's room.
- The right to privacy.
- The right to host guests with the expectation that guests are to respect the rights of the host's roommate and other residents in the community.
- The right to settle conflicts.
- The right to be free from intimidation, physical and emotional harm.
- The right to expect reasonable cooperation in the use of "room shared" appliances (telephone, refrigerator, etc.) and a commitment to honor agreed-upon payment procedures.
Please consult the Whittier College Student Handbook and Guide to Residential Living for full text on policies pertaining to the residence halls and student conduct. Resident students are responsible for knowing all College policies.
